Tanning is the process of converting putrescible skin into non-putrescible leather, usually with tannin, an acidic chemical compound that prevents decomposition and often imparts color.

In the older days the Dutch province of Brabant was well known for this industrie for leather and shoes. The original statue is standing at the square in Dongen, the village where Ecco Leather is founded and still active.
